Career Story

John Eric Hart

Managing Director & Head TPS I&CB Canada
Global Transaction Banking, Capital Markets

My career development has been underpinned by education and hard work layered on top of discipline and accountability, but ultimately has been driven by the relationship with influential leaders and incredible colleagues who have counseled me in the hard times and have applauded me in the good.

What was your job in the military?

  • Retired as Captain, 21 AC&W Squadron Administration Officer, and graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston
  • Trained as an AWC – Air Weapons Controller, working under the larger unit Fighter Group under the NORAD mandate at 22 Wing North Bay
  • Overseas service in NATO Operation Deny Flight 1994/95

Why did you decide BMO was right for you and why do you love working here?

  • At the 10-year mark of my military career, I was presented with the opportunity to join BMO with Electronic Banking Services, Smart Card Services.
  • I was presented every opportunity to grow and learn early in my career, and ultimately sponsored to complete my CPC, CPA-CMA, FCIB, and MBA(FS) within the first 5-years.
  • Following my business education, my career continues to advance with diverse opportunities that have led to my current position in Capital Markets.

How do you take the skills you used in the military and use those today?

  • The core skills of self-discipline and accountability are the skills that I reflect on the most when thinking of my military career. I grew up and matured in the military with the formative years between 17-27, learning how to make my bed, shine my shoes, and control aircraft in the field of battle.  Accountability for yourself and your actions was paramount every day.

What has helped you in your career development and what lessons have you learned along the way as you explored new opportunities at BMO?

  • My career development has been underpinned by education and hard work, layered on top of discipline and accountability, but ultimately has been driven by the relationship with influential leaders and incredible colleagues who have counseled me in the hard times and have applauded me in the good.
  • Be patiently impatient in knowing what you want and asking for what you need. Do not be afraid to take a calculated risk and make changes at the center of who you are.

In your experience, what has made you successful at BMO?

  • When I have focused on making the bank successful my career has followed suit, with success having been rewarded with success. Focus your efforts unselfishly.
  • Leadership above the individual is key to maintaining a focus on the mission of the bank, leading by example, Being BMO, and living the vision
  • Understand customer experience in the context of shareholder return, and both the customer and the shareholder will be made happy.

What are you currently working on that is helping you build on different skills?

  • The TPS I&CB Canada team is at the forefront of the Capital Markets execution of the bank’s Global Deposit Strategy and empowered to grow above market levels.
  • Deposit-taking is core to a bank and conceptually simple; but nothing could be further from the truth, as the strategy to win in a competitive deposit market is multi-faceted and inter-dependent with many other people and departments.
  • The skills to succeed are rooted in solid strategy, superb execution, robust partnerships, and an obsessive focus on client experience.

What excites you about the next year ahead?

  • Six months ago, I led the reintegration of TPS I&CB Canada business from Commercial Banking into Capital Markets. We have settled well into Corporate Banking’s Global Transaction Banking and have found our new footing.
  • I now have the real opportunity to allow my team to leverage a new organization structure, fully engage partners and influencers within Capital Markets, and execute on our business strategy without constraint; we can pursue the full potential of the TPS business with our clients.

How would you describe your experience and career at BMO in 1 sentence?

  • Every opportunity to pursue and succeed in your career by taking advantage of your strengths developed in diverse backgrounds, while delivering on unique experiences.
