Career Story

Manisha Burman

Head, Personal Salesforce Effectiveness

At BMO, we put a significant focus on talent…I am most proud when I see someone who has worked with me grow their career. It’s rewarding to see my colleagues achieve their career goals, and, to know I’ve played a role (big or small) in their success.

Why did you decide BMO was right for you and why do you love working here?

BMO offers an outstanding work environment and culture – it’s what attracted me to the organization, it’s what keeps me here, and, it’s why I feel confident recommending this company to others. Compared to many of our competitors, we offer the benefits of a smaller organization – more entrepreneurial, greater access to leadership – with the strengths of a larger one – multiple career paths, strong stability and sophisticated resources – so we can really focus on looking after our customers and our employees.

What has made you successful at BMO, helped you in your career development and what lessons have you learned along the way?

To be successful at BMO, it is important to drive results while embodying BMO’s actions – that is, building strong, productive relationships, focusing on collaboration, and taking a values based approach.

BMO is a relationship bank. While it is easy to get immersed in your day-to-day, take the time to build your network – compare experiences, seek feedback, offer support and be open to how you can be even more effective.

What are you currently working on that is helping you build on different skills?

In my current role, I have accountability for our International teams. This has given me an opportunity to gain a more global perspective, take a one bank approach, while understanding and respecting the needs of multiple jurisdictions.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

I enjoy finding ways to do things better and improve the experience of our managers and our employees. In my time at BMO, I have had the privilege of working with leaders who are supportive of change and who have empowered me to make things happen – it is rewarding to see the impact.

What is your proudest moment working at BMO and what excites you about the year ahead?

At BMO, we put a significant focus on talent. Leaders go out of their way to get-to-know their people, understand what’s on their minds and how they can help. I am most proud when I see someone who has worked with me grow their career. It’s rewarding to see my colleagues achieve their career goals, and, to know I’ve played a role (big or small) in their success.

As Chief Human Resources Officer for Capital Markets and International, I have the privilege of working in a fast paced environment with bright, capable leaders and talented HR colleagues who are committed to their clients and their teams. Over the past three years, we’ve tackled a number of complex issues and through our work, improved our employee programs and practices. We’ve achieved a lot, but there is always more work to do – this opportunity for impact is what keeps me engaged in my role, and the year ahead.
