Career Story

Stephanie Nguyen

Global Equity Products,
Equity Derivatives

It was during one of the many interviews when someone at BMO asked me “Who’s Stephanie?” – they cared about who I was. That was when I knew why I wanted to come back to BMO.

Why did you decide BMO was right for you and why do you love working here?

Like all final year MBA students going through the recruiting process, researching on the companies I want to work at is equally important as the type of job I want to pursue. Having worked at BMO prior to going back to school, I was familiar with the culture here. It was during one of the many interviews when someone at BMO asked me “Who’s Stephanie?” – they cared about who I was. That was when I knew why I wanted to come back to BMO. For the interviews, I was prepared for technical questions and market knowledge but I did not anticipate a question that genuinely asked who I am as a person and what I’m about. That’s the unique culture that BMO has – it cares not only about its customers but its employees as well and that’s essentially what BMO is about.

Why did you choose BMO for your internship and how did it prepare you for your full time role?

I chose the BMO Sales & Trading rotational program because it provided a well-rounded experience for someone who wants exposure to both sales and trading. From that, I found sales more suitable to my interests and skill set. Equity Derivatives was the desk I had the most interest in and I proposed to the team how I may add value. Fortunately, I was able to secure a full time position on the desk. I strive to always seek out new opportunities, which has helped me in my full time role as I continue to add new products to my coverage list and expand my client base.

What are you currently working on that is helping you build on different skills?

I’m currently learning to trade on a new algorithmic trading system and this will broaden my current skill set. This will help me do my job better and provide enhanced client service. This is in addition to the many skills that I’m constantly looking to improve such as being a stronger negotiator and presenter. BMO offers professional development sessions that focus on these skills and more so I hope to participate in them when I can.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job & what excites you about what lies ahead?

The dynamic environment that I work in allows me to be constantly learning whether it’s a new product or a new skill set. I feel that there’s an opportunity for me to grow in what I do so certainly it’s rewarding to work for a bank that fosters employee development.

As Canada’s oldest bank, it is an exciting time for all of us as we reflect on the bank’s past successes and we continuously work to be the bank that defines great customer experience. I look forward to working towards the same goals in my day to day work here.
